World Press Freedom Day being celebrated in Mauritania through journalists’ capacity building
28-04-2006 (Rabat/Nouackchott)
Celebrating World Press Freedom Day on 3 May, UNESCO and UNDP organize three workshops for Mauritanian journalists in the country’s capital Nouakchott from 2 to 4 May 2006 within the framework of the creation of a Media House in Mauritania.
The training modules cover the following subjects:
The unique situation of the media landscape in Mauritania with characteristics from both sub-Saharan Africa and the Maghreb was the basis of the development of the Media House project in Mauritania that is intended to become a meeting place to discuss and exchange ideas among media professionals in the country.
The main objective of the Media House is to serve as a platform for various media actors, promote a culture of professional ethics and deontology for media professionals, and provide a space for building capacities through research material, for example surveys on media market and audience, and access to training and equipment. It is hoped that the Media House will be able to mobilize resources in order to assure its financial autonomy.
- Ethic and deontology, hosted by the National Democratic Institute;
- ICTs and e-journalism, hosted by the Mauritanian National Commission for UNESCO;
- Writing techniques, hosted at the Agence mauritanienne d'information (AMI).
