Jury meets to review radio script writing contest mobilizing for the MDGs
Early this year a CD Rom entitled “Global Goals - Local Action” was distributed to more than 500 community radio stations in the Africa region to support capacity building of rural and community radio broadcasters.
Radio producers were invited to take part in a radio script writing competition focusing on the MDGs, among other things, and the entries have just been reviewed by a jury through a conference call organized by UNESCO’s implementing partner, the Developing Countries Farm Radio Network (DCFRN).

The jury, composed of DCFRN Board Member and Director General of Vanier College, Gilbert Héroux, Secretary General of AMARC, Marcelo Solervicens, Blythe McKay; Development Communication Coordinator; DCFRN, and two staff members from UNESCO, Venus Jennings and Jocelyn Josiah who provided ratings for the script.

Members of the jury based their judgement on standard criteria which includes the link to a specific MDG, input and views from local sources, clarity and accuracy, engaging script, and format. Some of members of the jury took on this activity as a learning exercise and matched the criteria with their individual views on the educational value; clarity and potential of the entries while others focused on the extent of discussion that the potential radio programme invites from the general public. The radio broadcasters will soon receive feedback from the judges.

All the winning scripts will be published in the DCFRN June/July 2006 script package, and may also include 4 scripts that did not win but were of good quality, thus bringing the total script number to 10 in the package.

“The MDG script competition activity was a useful one and should stimulate future such activities with DCFRN broadcasters,” said Blythe McKay, Development Communication Coordination, DCFRN.
