UNESCO publishes handbook on gender, conflict and journalism

UNESCO publishes handbook on gender, conflict and journalism
Front cover of the Handbook
A handbook on “Gender, Conflict and Journalism” for mid-career journalists in South Asia and elsewhere, where journalists’ choices are made when framing a conflict story, is now available in hard copy, CD-ROM and online.
The handbook that is a result of a Roundtable on “The Gender Perspective in Conflict Reporting” organized from 7 to 9 April 2004 in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu by the UNESCO-Nepal Press Institute provides clear ideas and practical strategies on how to reveal and analyze some social and political constraints in covering conflict in the light of gender relations and how to put women into the picture, both as producers of media information and as subjects of it.

In addressing the issue of journalists’ creativity in process of finding words and images to challenge gender stereotypes about conflict, authors Fiona Lloyd and Ross Howard have been greatly inspired by the commitment of South Asian journalists and media practitioners and the level of debate about media issues in the region.

The 2004 Roundtable was organized on the assumption that media have an important role to play in raising awareness about integrating a gender perspective into all aspects of prevention, conflict management and peace-building activities. The Roundtable agreed conclusions and shared experiences became the major building blocks of this handbook, along with the clear and practical responses to newsroom challenges.
