“Information Commons for e-Science” workshop opens in Paris tomorrow

An international workshop on “Creating the Information Commons for e-Science: Towards Institutional Policies and Guidelines for Action” that is organized by Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA) opens tomorrow at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
The two-day event, a contribution to achieve the goals of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), aims at promoting the development of institutional policies and guidelines for action in support of “information commons” for e-science.
The work plan comprises four objectives:
CODATA is an interdisciplinary Scientific Committee of the International Council for Science (ICSU), which works to improve the quality, reliability, management and accessibility of data of importance to all fields of science and technology. CODATA is a resource that provides scientists and engineers with access to international data activities for increased awareness, direct cooperation and new knowledge.
The work plan comprises four objectives:
- Review of opportunities/challenges for realizing global collaborative e-science on the emerging “cyber-infrastructure”.
- Review government and university mechanisms for managing publicly funded scientific information in the digitally networked research environment; identify problems and develop procedural solutions.
- Identify and analyze institutional, economic, policy, and legal benefits/drawbacks to providing public access to and unrestricted access of publicly funded scientific information.
- Put forward resolutions/recommendations that enable the scientific community to more effectively utilize scientific data and information.
