UNESCO Distributes over 190 Computers to Public Schools in Lebanon

07-02-2005 (Beirut)
As part of the “Bridging the Digital Divide” project lead by the UNESCO Office in Lebanon’s Capital Beirut, over 190 computers were distributed to 28 schools in the Bikaa Region in Northern and Eastern Lebanon. Public schools in Baalbak, Rashiya and Hirmel Provinces received as many as 10 computers for each school depending on number of students.
The project, under which this recent initiative comes, started in 2001. It consists in refurbishing used personal computers at minimal cost, installing special software for training purposes, and distributing them to public schools in remote and poor areas in Lebanon. The PCs were donated to UNESCO by the private sector.

“With the computer donations and the help of our partners, we hope that this project will gain sustainability and keep on providing school children with access to computers”, says George Awad from the UNESCO Office in Beirut.
