Investigating the Goals of Education for All - Workshop on EFA for Journalists in Viet Nam
04-02-2005 (Hanoi)
As part of the UNESCO’s Regional Communication and Information Programme on “Education Makes News”, the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO and UNESCO Office Hanoi organized a training workshop for journalists on reporting on “Education for All” (EFA) and other education topics related to the international EFA programme.
The two-day workshop was held in Do Son, Hai Phong, 19-20 January 2005. It aimed at supporting Viet Nam 's commitment to the global Education for All programme by providing the journalist with information about EFA, both on global and national levels.
The 25 participating journalists specialized in reporting on education came from main national and provincial (Hai Phong and Hai Duong) newspapers and radio and television stations.
The Ministry of Education and Training was represented by Nguyen Xuan Phuong, EFA National Coordinator, who briefed the journalists about Government policies and programs in the field of education, including the national progress towards EFA Goals.
Media trainers Dinh Thi Thuy Hang (Institute of Journalism and Communication) and Do Anh Duc (Vietnam National University) facilitated the training and subsequent discussions.
The workshop participants brainstormed and discussed ideas for enhancing the news value of educational stories and developing new story angles and bringing fresh perspectives to the news coverage.
Follow-up training activities will be planned and implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and media organizations. Information kits for both media and other user groups will also be developed and disseminated during 2005.
The workshop built on the regional training programme on “Investigating the Implementation of the Education for All (EFA) Targets”. This UNESCO Regional workshop was hosted by the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) and took place 16-25 August 2004 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Participating media trainers from Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Nepal, Pakistan, Thailand , Tajikistan, and Vietnam now serve as resource persons in the national workshops on the same topic organized by UNESCO in the eight Asian countries.
The workshop in Kuala Lumpur was built on the “Education makes news", an EFA media training resource kit of UNESCO.
Getting a grip on complex education issues can be a formidable task for many journalists. To facilitate reporting and writing on Education for All, UNESCO has developed “Education Makes News!”. With this tool journalists and other media professionals can learn to create interesting stories and bring the EFA debate to centre stage.
