UNESCO Workshop on WSIS for African NGOs to be Held in Mali Next Week

16-05-2002 ()
- As the Executive Secretariat of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) is organizing its first regional Conference in Mali's capital Bamako, from 28 to 30 May 2002, UNESCO is holding a pre-conference workshop, also in Bamako, on 26 and 27 May to provide a platform for discussion for African professional NGOs and civil society regarding the inclusion of the African region in the emerging Information Society.
UNESCO launched the consultative process with representatives of professional NGOs and civil society to prepare the WSIS in early 2002. After a first round of consultations in February and April, UNESCO plans to enlarge its consultative process to embrace the largest possible number of representatives of NGOs and Civil Society. Regional consultative meetings are an essential part of this process, since they are an efficient way to involve organizations from developing countries and to take into account specific regional problems and issues.

The Bamako NGOs consultation will gather the representatives of more than twenty African NGOs. IN addition to providing the framework for discussions on African concerns vis-à-vis the Information Society, it is aimed at presenting the WSIS and the preparatory process launched by UNESCO. It will also allow for the examination and discussion of the basic principles and proposals for action identified during the first round of UNESCO consultations in February and April. The views expressed by the participants of the workshop will be transmitted to the WSIS Executive Secretariat and to the participants of the Bamako Regional Conference as civil society’s views on the WSIS issues.

The aim of the World Summit on the Information Society, to be held in Geneva in December 2003 and in Tunis in 2005.is to formulate a common vision of the Information Society, while respecting diversity and offering equitable development opportunities for all.
