UNESCO to Hold Conference on Free Expression in Cyberspace

13-01-2005 (Paris)
UNESCO is hosting an international conference in Paris next month on "Freedom of Expression in Cyberspace," which will provide a forum for discussing whether universal free expression standards should be applied to the Internet and how free expression can be protected while respecting individual privacy, national laws and cultural differences.
Scheduled to take place from 3 to 4 February 2005 at UNESCO's headquarters, the conference is one of UNESCO's thematic meetings contributing to the preparation of the second phase of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). It will gather prominent figures from the international sphere, civil society groups, scholars in the field, journalists and other media professionals, and government officials from all regions of the world who deal with Internet-related issues.

Panel sessions will follow a keynote speech, followed by interventions from panellists and a general debate open to participants. Interpretation in English and French will be provided during the meeting.
