UNESCO/Jikji Memory of the World Prize: New Date for Submission of Nominations

22-12-2004 (Paris)
Nominations for the first UNESCO/Jikji Memory of the World Prize can now be submitted up to 28 February 2005. The Prize promotes the objectives of the Memory of the World Programme commemorating the inscription of the Buljo jikji simche yojeol, the oldest known book of movable metal print in the world, in the Memory of the World Register.
The Jikji contains the essentials of Zen Buddhism compiled by priest Baegun in late Goryeo period. The book was printed in two volumes: the first volume has yet to be found and the second volume is being kept in the National Library of France.

The Prize, consisting of an award of US$30 000, will be given every two years to individuals or institutions that have made significant contributions to the preservation and accessibility of documentary heritage. Funded by the Republic of Korea through arrangements made with the Municipal Council of Cheongju City, this Prize was approved by UNESCO’s Executive Board in April 2004.

The new deadline for the submission is 28 February 2005. Nominations should be submitted through the National Commission for UNESCO or the Memory of the World National Committee in the country where the nominator is located.

Each nomination must include, in English or in French, a description of the candidate’s background and achievements, a summary of the work submitted for consideration, and a review of the way in which the work submitted has contributed to the preservation and accessibility of documentary heritage.

Nominations must be submitted to UNESCO either:

  • by mail (UNESCO/Jikji Memory of the World Prize, Information Society Division, 1, rue Miollis, 75732 Paris Cedex 15, France) using the attached nomination form); or

  • by completing the online nomination form at http://www.unesco.org/webworld/portal/processing/forms/jikji/en/
