International Friends of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Met in Egypt
Bibliotheca Alexandrina
Friends of the “Bibliotheca Alexandrina” met last month in Alexandria, Egypt, for the second time since the new Library of Alexandria was officially inaugurated in October 2002. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina “Friends” Associations - more than 35 world-wide - help to promote and contribute to the success of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina through donations, publications, conferences and fund-raising.
UNESCO helped to launch the International “Friends” and over the years has played a key role in the development of the “Friends” and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina’s programmes and collections.

This seventh meeting of the “International Friends” (9-12 October 2004) afforded an opportunity to exchange views on past and possible future actions in support of the Library, its institutes, museums, planetarium, exhibition spaces and conference centre. It was also an occasion for UNESCO to renew its commitment to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. This is especially important now that a “Framework Agreement” has been signed between UNESCO and the Egyptian Government, covering cooperation between the two institutions in areas of mutual interest.

Drawing its inspiration from the Ancient Library of Alexandria, the most famous library of antiquity, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a modern public research institution serving scholars, researchers and the public at large.

UNESCO has been associated with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina since its inception in the mid-1980s, thereby helping to endow the City of Alexandria and the Mediterranean Region with an important educational, scientific and cultural centre for the transmission and sharing of knowledge.
