Many of the more than 500 librarians, records officers and IT managers in Zambia who use WINISIS, UNESCO’s information storage and retrieval software, were this year trained thanks to the Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) and the Technological Development Advisory Unity (TDAU), a department of the University of Zambia.
“Since the Zambia Micro- ISIS User group does not have facilities and funds to host trainings workshops, ZABS and TDAU always assist the group in organizing participants who contribute towards hiring of computers, seminar rooms and meals for such training workshops. This has worked very well since 1997” says Davis Mukuka, the WINIS distributor in Zambia.
This year the group held 3 beginners workshops on WINISIS. The first and second ones were facilitated by the ZABS and were held in Kabwe from 5 to 9 April 2004, and from 7 to 10 July 2004. The first workshop was attended by 10 participants, while the second attracted 12 participants from the public and the private sector.
The third workshop, attended by 26 librarians, records officers and IT managers, was held in Lusaka from 7 to 10 September and facilitated by TDAU.
The main objectives of the workshops were to equip the participants with basic knowledge on the use of WINISIS in their organizations and to distribute the software on behalf of UNESCO.
At the end of each workshop, Davis Mukuka, the main resource person, makes copies of the programme and presents one copy to each participant. “Our ZAMISIS-User group has recorded 48 new users of WINISIS”, Davis Mukuka reports..
The estimated number of CDS/ISIS users in Zambia is 500 people. The software is mainly used in libraries, archives and records centres.
The ZAMISIS user group intends to hold an advanced workshop on WINISIS in March 2005.
