Workshop of Conflict-Sensitive Reporting for Women Journalists Starts in Nepal

07-04-2004 (Paris)
Today starts in Nepal's capital Kathmandu a three-day workshop on "Conflict-sensitive reporting: a gender perspective” for women journalists in South Asia. The objectives of the workshop that is organized by the Nepal Press Institute, in cooperation with UNESCO, are to develop a professional critique on preventing of, and reporting on conflict, ethnic and religious controversies.
It also aims at sensitising both female and male journalists on human rights and conflict-sensitive reporting and at developing a common platform for effective conflict prevention and resolution at both community and regional level. It is expected that the workshop will pave the way for the establishment of a network of South Asian women journalists and will promote a better and more diversified regional news exchange and sharing of best practices.

The consultation was proposed as media organizations recognized the growing power of the media in South Asia and the need to maintain media credibility and accuracy in a climate of cultural or religious misunderstanding. In the South Asian context, media practitioners felt that they have an important role to play in identifying tangibly new and additional ways to strengthen regional cooperation in conflict prevention and resolution by promoting a carefully balanced public debate on policies pursued in conflict situations.

The seminar discussions and presentations will be edited and published in a handbook on conflict sensitive reporting.
