Nearly ten percent of the more than 1,400 parchments preserved at the Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences in Vilnius are now on line available thanks to a UNESCO project that was recently completed. The digital images of 121 parchments containing information of outstanding historical value cover the period from 1187 to 1500.
The aim of the project was to digitize the oldest parchment documents held at the Manuscripts Department of the Library and to make them available to everyone. For a long time, these documents - mainly royal privileges, donations, papal bulls, international agreements containing valuable historical data on politics, social context, family relations, geography, toponomastics, genealogy and linguistics - were accessible only to scientists. However, the increased interest in the country’s history prompted the need to make these collections available to a wider public using ICTs.
The Manuscripts Department of the Library of Lithuanian Academy of Sciences (LLAS) preserve 1412 parchments covering the period from the eleventh century to the beginning of the twentieth century. This is one of the largest collections of parchments in the Baltic States with a great international value as it refers to Lithuania, Poland, Belarus, Latvia, Estonia, Russia, Ukraine, Germany, Austria and the Vatican.
