The Auschwitz-Birkenau Archives, 1940-1945
Photo related to the "Memory of Poland".
The archives contain remains of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp which are on the list of the world's cultural and natural heritage and are to serve as a negative example and a warning.
They constitute an important fragment of the world's heritage. Of the same character are documents which come from the office of the camp's SS commandant and include personal files or prisoners and Waffen SS officers, orders and regulations, transport lists and documents referring to the use of prisoner labour and the extermination of prisoners. They also include construction plans of the camp and plans of its expansion as well as of infrastructure located outside the camp but directly linked to it. The other part of the records includes documents concerning resitance, correspondence secretly sent from the camp, reports made by those who managed to escape and 39,000 photographs of prisoners.
